Chew/Revival is a one-shot of the Chew comic series in crossover with Revival. With story by John Layman and art by Rob Guillory, the issue was originally published on May 28, 2014, by Image Comics.
Synopsis[]
- TWO GREAT TASTES THAT TASTE REALLY WEIRD TOGETHER! Tony Chu heads to Wisconsin in two all-new original tales by the creative teams of both critically acclaimed titles! A great jumping-on point for readers who've heard how damn good these titles are on their own, and a twisted delight for those already in the know![1]
Plot[]
A chef prepares a çoban salatası and presents it to the master chef, who harshly criticizes the plate. The master chef says the chef should throw it away again and prepare it until he convinces the master chef he can properly use a blade. The chef then uses the kitchen knife to cut off the master chef's hand.
Tony Chu and John Colby from Food and Drug Administration arrive in Wausau in a helicopter to investigate a dismembering case. Sheriff Cypress directs them to Dana and Ibrahaim. Colby explains Chu is a cibopath: he gets impressions from what he eats, be it an apple or a bite of reanimated necrotic human tissue.
At the morgue, Dana shows them the various body parts the police intercepted. She explains not all belong to Revivers, but some people believe eating Reviver parts can cause immortality, and these parts were recovered from an operation smuggling them outside the quarantine zone. Randy finds the head of Mrs. Swensen and puts it on her sewn but incomplete body; she screams and punches him. Ibrahaim calms her down, and Mrs. Swensen says the last thing she remembers is the Check brothers kidnapping her then using a chainsaw.
Mrs. Swensen attacks John, and Ibrahaim and Randy separate the fight. Meanwhile, Tony discusses with Dana their plan of action; he won't nibble all the body parts, and the arm they are looking for isn't there. They drive to Dagmar's Best Bites, where they meet Em leaving with takeout. She explains the owner redid the menu and turned it into a 5-star restaurant overnight. Tony tastes Em's takeout and identifies Dagmar Fiskbüller as the owner and a Reviver. They plan their entrance, and Em offers to help.
Dana and Tony open the door to the kitchen, wielding their guns, and declare Dagmar's arrest. The master chef throws a knife at Em's face, and Dana tells Tony not to worry about her sister and go after the escaping Dagmar. Outside, Tony holds Dagmar at gunpoint. Revealing the missing hand sewn into his chest, Dagmar punches Tony with his three hands. Dagmar stops his attack when Em uses the knife to stab his head.
In the interview room of the Wausau Police Department, Dagmar tells Ibrahaim he always wanted to be a great chef, and coming back to life made him realize he had a second chance to do it without letting anything get in his way. He cries as he says he managed to fuck that up.
In the observation room, Dana doesn't understand how Dagmar was able to accept a transplanted limb or get someone else's abilities. Tony explains that Dagmar, in addition to being a Reviver, is a punicacuratio: ingestion of pomegranate berries has a preternatural restorative effect on him. Dana thanks Tony for leaving out of his report the part that Em is a Reviver. Tony says he knows something about keeping weird secrets and dead sisters. He then asks about his partner.
Elsewhere, John sleeps beside a smiling Mrs. Swensen.
