Martha "Em" Ann Cypress was a student at the University of Wisconsin,[1] the younger sister of Officer Dana Cypress, and a Reviver.[2]

Biography[]

Early life[]

Em was the youngest daughter of Sheriff Wayne Cypress and Patricia Cypress. Her mother died when Dana, Em's older sister, was six years old.[3] Growing up, Dana considered Em to be "daddy's favorite."[2] When Dana was in high school, she smoked pot and had sex with her boyfriend Derrick Hinch instead of babysitting Em, who called their father to tell on Dana. Afterward, Dana beat Em for being grounded, and Em explained she had told their father because she loved Dana.[4]

Adulthood[]

While attending the University of Wisconsin—Marathon County, Em began an affair with Professor Aaron Weimar, who was married to Nithiya Weimar. They had sex for the last time on Christmas Eve[5] before Em spent Christmas with Dana and Cooper Cypress, her nephew.[6]

On the night of New Year, Em's car broke on the bridge to Wausau, and an attacker hit her in the head, killing her as she fell into the river. On the morning of what became known as the Revival Day, Em was one of the people who came back to life, and she returned to her car.[7] Em intended to keep her status as a Reviver a secret, but she was stabbed while accompanying Dana in a police investigation and quickly came back to life in front of her sister. Em asked to keep it a secret from their father,[2] and Dana vowed to find whoever had killed her sister on Revival Day.[8]

Behind the scenes[]

  • Tim Seeley had designs of Em from as early as 1993, influenced by his interest in The Crow comics. She was an undead superhero named "the Cynic" at first;[9] the design evolved through the years, but she was always a young "undead" girl dealing with her newfound immortality. In 2006, Seeley considered using Em in his comic Hack/Slash, but the idea changed into his character Acid Angel. He returned to his design of Em after he and Mike Norton decided to do a comic together, and they adapted her to the "rural noir" story.[10]
  • Romy Weltman portrays Em's counterpart in the Revival TV series.
